  1. Hi, Maria, I just want to ask a question may be very close to our reading materials of week 3. After learning Human Factor this semester. I always try to observe some stuff and human’s bahaviours in our life then ask myself: Is it hard to use? Because I search something from the Internet, when I am asked that this is hard to use. I still start to understand: oh? really? maybe kind of hard to use. What I said above just want to express: people always are hard to find or judge whether it is hard to use or especially for young people. Honestly, only when I see some surveys or articles, I start to understand maybe it is hard to use but I didn’t pay attention to it before. Moreover, some people may hold the view (like my parents) that because they are out of style. If they read the instructions carefully or ask others, they can know how to use and it will become easy to use. I don’t know how to analysis this behaviour.

  2. In the slides for Memory, you point out that recognition is often slow (and requires more effort) compared to recall – but from a HCI perspective, we usually want to present the user with more opportunities for recognition over recall, because e.g. it’s easier to recognise that a little icon of a house represents a “home” button – you don’t need to (consciously) remember anything, you just know what it is via recognition. Obviously the things should be easily recognisable (like play, pause etc. icons for videos) for this to work.

tl;dr maybe I’ve misinterpreted (or just nit-picking) but it seems as though you’re presenting recall as “better” than recognition, when I don’t think that’s always the case, e.g. see https://www.nngroup.com/articles/recognition-and-recall/

  3. Hi, in memory recognition from ch5. There is a mention about recognizing objects by users in the interface. Can we consider grouping similar functionalities of the the system under one topic is an example. An example came to my mind is In Microsoft word the there is grouping for features. For instance, Under edit topic there are the list of all functions such as font color, size… etc

  4. Memory biases is an very important factor to result in our memory. For my understanding, the reason why we produce memory biases is due to human effects like humor, age, moods. Sometimes, people used to remember the good thing to them, and they choose to forget something subconscious. It is right?

  5. Hi Maria,

I know the central executive is a attention controller which controls the link between working memory and long-term memory. However, I confused about the role “episodic buffer” that the central executive has. Can you give an example for that?
